Offices of the City Commission
PO Box 4748
Clearwater, FL 33758-4748
Dear Mrs. Garvey:
As Vice President
of Business Development for The Totally Fun
Company, located here in Clearwater at 600
Cleveland Street, Suite 400, I feel it would be
of interest to you and your office to know that
we will be moving out of the downtown Clearwater
offices where we've been located since December
of 1992.
The Totally Fun
Company is an internationally recognized themed
entertainment company with a highly regarded
reputation in our industry and headed by Peter
Alexander, TFC's President, who is widely
acknowledged as an industry leader (as you will
see by the attached list of his credits).
The purpose of
this letter is to inform you of our decision to
leave this downtown area in hopes that you will
make concerted efforts to make certain changes
that we feel are critical in avoiding a mass
exodus of the existing businesses in this
location. In short, the downtown area has taken
on the look and feel of a military base. The
presence of thousands of uniformed Scientologists
and their "security police" swarming
the downtown area is not only oppressive to those
of us who have to work here, but is especially
disconcerting to our clients that come here to
our offices to meet with us.
We are thoroughly
embarrassed by the look and feel of the downtown
area when we receive visitors to our offices,
(visitors, I might add, who represent all aspects
of the entertainment industry and who are flying
in from all parts of the world) when we are
forced to explain this blatant para-military
presence. It's simply an unacceptable climate in
which to expose our clients.
Now, with the
announcement that this cult will be expanding its
presence in downtown, bringing in untold
thousands MORE
well, I suggest strongly that
you revisit this situation and prevent, what we
perceive to be, a death hold on this otherwise
lovely community.
We are sorry to be
leaving what had promised to be an idyllic town
in which to establish our base, but we have no
choice. Our employees are uncomfortable and
intimidated by these cultists and won't even go
out to lunch in order to avoid them. The threat
of Scientology's expansion "sealed the
deal" in our decision to relocate.
We realize that it
is difficult to remove their overbearing
omnipresence, but for the sake of this once fine
town, you should know what the repercussions are
and will continue to be as this cult continues
its occupation of your town.
Best Regards,
Patricia Greenway
VP Business Development
